Moana (2016) Movie Review

One of the latest Disney Princesses, Moana delivers dazzling visuals, groovy songs, running gags, and incredible adventure. Similar to Mulan and Merida, she showcases her strength and perseverance through independence.

Moana may not be one of Disney's most prominent films, but it still stamped its legacy throughout its history and is well-admired by the audience.

Plot Overview

The movie begins with a narration of the legend of Te Fiti, a living island that brought life to the ocean using a magical and powerful stone that became her heart and life. Meanwhile, Maui, a demi-god shapeshifter, stole the stone and caused Te Fiti to disintegrate. In the incoming commotion, a volcanic demon, Te Ka, attacked him and lost his powerful hook and the heart of Te Fiti.

One thousand years have passed, and the ocean chooses Moana to return the heart of Te Fiti. Her parents, the leaders of their tribe, try to prevent her from leaving to prepare her to become the next island chief. When the effects of Te Fiti losing her heart start to creep up on their island, Moana must make a hard choice to save it. She needs to sail through the depths of the ocean, find Maui, and ask for his help to return the heart of Te Fiti to where it belongs.

Review

Moana brought in some exciting voice talents, including Dwayne Johnson, Auli'i Cravalho, Nicole Scherzinger, and many more. Their range was also showcased by the songs they performed in the movie.

Moana's character differs from the classical Disney Princesses because she does not wait for her prince charming but chooses to take it upon herself and solve her problems. She continuously paints her Disney royal status with independence and pride. Even her character design is different from the other princesses. I would not mind if future Disney princesses were like Moana.

I had so much fun watching this film. The songs were catchy, and the story was exciting. Its themes of breaking away from tradition and expanding your horizon fit perfectly for this movie.

Moana has stamped herself to be one of Disney's finest characters.

A good 4 out of 5 stars.
